Are you looking for The Best Charcoal Grill And Smoker Combination? We’re with you on this one. Choosing the right grill can seriously be one of the biggest decisions for the backyard chef.
The grill that you choose can make or break your gathering. Your grill needs to be able to consistently cook delicious food for your family and friends while being enjoyable to use. After over 20 years of grilling and smoking, I’ve come to know a few things to look for in a good grill.
First, let’s just make the buying process easier by eliminating one of the obvious choices, the gas grill. I know, hold on one sec, hear me out before you get all uptight let me be the first to admit that I was ALWAYS a die-hard gas griller myself. That was until I moved south and was introduced to REAL BBQ.
Sorry Dad, once you taste what real BBQ tastes like, you will never go back to gas. I guess you can say once you go charcoal you never go back, haha! But seriously speaking, a gas grill just cannot rival the smoky flavor and tenderness that a Charcoal Grill and Smoker Combination delivers.
Alright, now that we have eliminated the gas grill, I’m pretty sure I can also convince you that times have changed and the Charcoal Grill and Smoker Combination is the only way to go.
Before we get into the top 10 which I will list below for your ease of access, I wanted to talk about some things you need to look for in a charcoal grill and smoker combo. I believe that many people have trouble with charcoal because they buy the first grill or smoker they see with the thought that they’re all the same. They’re not!

Now before you go buying the biggest, most expensive grill out there because you think expensive is better, let’s put away our credit cards for a sec and get into some important fundamentals about charcoal grill and smokers. Of course, there is a lot that we can’t cover in this brief discussion but here are some things that we think are the most important for you to know.
The Fuel Source For Your Charcoal Grill and Smoker Combination Unit
The charcoal grill uses briquettes that contain additives like borax, starch, and sawdust from waste lumber. These briquettes, especially the “Ready to Light” briquettes, which have even more added chemicals, can leave a horrible after-taste to food. Ceramic grills use natural lump charcoal that is made from charred hardwoods like oak, hickory, and maple that add a wonderful smoky flavor without the chemical after-taste. The natural lump charcoal also runs at almost half of the cost per grill as the charcoal briquettes.
Cooking Temperature
Consistent temperatures are somewhat difficult to achieve with a charcoal grill. It is possible to achieve low temperatures depending on the amount of briquette charcoal, but really that becomes a guessing game. The charcoal grill can also achieve temperatures near 700°F, but realistically, high temperatures hover around 500°F for most models.
It is much easier to obtain consistent temperatures, as low as 225°F and as high as 750°F, with a charcoal grill smoker combo unit. Not to mention low temperatures can be retained for 12 hours or longer for smoking.
Versatility
This one is pretty self-explanatory. You really can’t beat having the ability to smoke and grill all in the same unit. Some units even allow you to do this simultaneously.
Not to mention you end up saving a lot of money and space not having to buy two separate units.
Key Features In A Charcoal Grill And Smoker Combo Unit
Hopefully, now you see that the Charcoal Grill and Smoker Combination is one of the best units to have for preparing all of your backyard meals. Here are a few major things to look for when choosing The Best Charcoal Grill and Smoker Combo units.
1. Craftmanship
In short, cheap units leak, which makes it difficult to stabilize temperature and control the amount of smoke. A leaky smoker can produce delicious food, but the result is unpredictable and takes constant monitoring. Inspect the seals, welds, and solidness of the unit before you purchase.
I typically look for units that are thick and weighty. Solid, heavy units hold and convey heat better compared to thin-walled units, which is particularly significant in northern climates. Thin walls will tend to bend, twist, and wear down easily, especially when under high heat.
2. Temperature Control
Look for a large temperature range. Make sure you are able to wrench it to 350-500°F to cook that Thanksgiving turkey and bring it down to 100°F because seriously, who doesn’t want to try smoking cheddar.
Do not buy a charcoal smoker combo grill without dampers or vents. With wood and charcoal cookers, heat is controlled by scaling back the oxygen supply. Ideally, there should be a damper on the firebox and another on the chimney stack.
Access! You need to be able to add fuel, wood, water, and check the meat without losing a lot of warmth. Search for simple admittance to the firebox to add fuel. Front-stacking and bureau-style smokers give you a lot simpler admittance to all racks than top-stacking and shot-style smokers. Some offset cookers have a rack that permits you to utilize the firebox as a barbecue.
3. Inner Versatility
Moveable racks are a must. The ability to change the inside design is ideal to allow for enormous chunks of ribs, half sections, or pork butts and surprisingly huge items like turkeys. Removable racks likewise make cleanup simpler.
4. Liquid Management
I always look for units with a water skillet. Numerous smokers, particularly projectiles, have a skillet that is set over the warmth source. You can fill it with water, lager, wine, and spices. The fluid helps control the temperature variances in the stove by increasing the dampness.
This also holds the meat back from drying out while the aromatics infiltrate the meat. The dish can likewise catch drippings. The standard bowl is 5-6 quarts, but in this case, size does matter, the bigger the better.
A dribble dish in addition to the water dish is also necessary. At times it is ideal to have these drips fall onto the fire and make steam and smoke. At other times it is ideal to accumulate the drippings for sauces. More often than not we simply need to dispose of drippings, and a decent smoker ought to have an approach to gather them for removal.
5. Easy To Clean
Make sure the unit is simple to clean, not just the outside but the inside too. On the off chance that you put resources into a gleaming hardened steel outside, you’ll presumably need to cover it after use. When you cook fat, use sauces, or even squeeze lemons over your food on the grill, all of this juiciness will dribble off and splatter.
These become favorable places for harmful, microscopic organisms to prosper. You actually need to be able to wipe down all surfaces that come into contact with the meat. This implies that racks should be the most straightforward to clean, however, it is also handy if the meshes, trickle dish, and water skillet can easily be removed and stuck safely in dishwater for a good washing. Ideally, the entire unit can just be hosed down. Make sure it is easy to eliminate debris and that water can’t get into any gadgets if hit by a high-pressure hose.
6. Good Working Area
Finally, look at the work surfaces and capacity. A few cookers include work tables and other work surfaces. You need these to put utensils on, sauces, cutting sheets, gloves, and so forth. If you have space, the more work surfaces, the better.
Some cookers include capacity and cupboards for storage, which is always a bonus to help keep the outdoor cooking area neat and tidy.
7. Manufacturers Warranty & Manual
The Manufacturers warranty says a lot about the unit. If the vendor is only willing to give a 3 to 6-month warranty, then I can safely say that you will probably only get one season out of the grill. Always, check online if the vendor is reliable and that they have good technical support. A bonus is when a vendor has a lot of information on their site and parts are easy to order.
Oh, and you can’t ever forget the must-have manual. The manual should have clear instructions on set-up, safety, and use with some bonus recipes.
Now that you know what to look for when buying a Charcoal Grill & Smoker Combination, I have put a list of the 10 Best Charcoal Grill and Smoker Combo with their pros and cons to help you decide the best grill for you according to your personal needs and budget.

WHEW! I wanna start smoking and grilling now, man! For some reason, this whole post got me hyped up. I want that Oklahoma Joe’s one! I wanna start learning how to properly grill and smoke foods, like maybe a hickory-smoked turkey leg like back when I was a kid!
This post was very well done and covered the topic of grilling and smoking perfectly. Hank from King of the Hill would be convinced to give up Propane after seeing this! I especially like how you sold your argument in the beginning of how Propane and gas grills are obsolete compared to Grill/Smoke combos!

I think the option that suits me best would be the Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn becauseI like the grill combo it comes with. It’s a nice addition.
I also like that it’s stainless steal. I plan to keep it outdoors so I don’t care much about it’s weight. And the large cooking area will be key for our next gatherings.

Hi.
We’ve had a Kamodo charcoal grill and smoker for a few years now. I was very pleased with it, to begin with, and had great success.
I am still very impressed with how fuel-efficient it is and how long the grill will retain heat. I have had a few problems though and I think that may be to do with the fuel.
While I agree it is much better to use charcoal from pure hardwood, the temperature inside the grill can be harder to control than if you use briquets. I actually find it is really easy to get the girl super hot, but I have a very hard time dialing down the temperature and keeping it low at say 250 degrees or lower.
I have mainly used it for grilling and I haven’t really tried to use it as a smoker. Is it easier to control the temperature of other cylindrical designs, and for example create zones with different temperatures?
That is something I am not able to do with the Kamado.
Thanks, Andy
Marlinda Davis February 24, 2022

Hi there,
I have a grill in my backyard, but it’s very small, and when I invite friends over, it takes more time to prepare the barbecue.
So we thought this year to invest in a larger grill to enjoy the food and stay with our friends instead of standing in front of the barbecue. My grill is gas, and to be honest.
I never wanted to buy charcoal because I’ve read somewhere that it’s not healthy at all. Have you heard about this? Anyway, what’s sure is that charcoal gives a better taste:)
The second on the list, Oklahoma Joe’s Longhorn Reverse Flow Charcoal Smoker and Grill Combo, is just beautiful. I’ll check this one on Amazon.
As I’ve never used charcoal, I don’t know if it’s easy to clean. Is it? I didn’t see the weight of this grill. It’s not written in the article.
Thank you for this excellent list of grills.
