20 Best Rated Rice Cookers of 2020 [Complete Reviews and Buyer’s Guide]

One of my most favorite small appliances to use is a rice cooker. That’s because it is:

  • easy to use
  • easy to clean
  • works without having to be constantly checked

If you follow the manufacturer’s and cooking instructions properly, these devices will cook your rice to fluffy perfection.

I’ve used a few different models in my thirty-some years of life and of course, some worked better than others yet they were equally as convenient.

So what’re the best rated rice cookers of 2020?

I’m telling you, this is a close competition between the best of the best but we’ve meticulously researched and read through reviews, descriptions and other information to make sure we’ve made the right choices. But before we get into our top pics, let’s discuss what you need to look for in a good unit.

Choosing the Best Rice Cooker For You

When you think about a word like ‘best’ it’s always hard to define from one person to the next. That’s because we all have our different preferences and needs.

For instance, you may like a more simple layout whereas someone else may like a more high-end finish or vice versa. You might have a small family or not eat rice that often so the best rice cooker for you might be a small unit whereas someone with a larger family that eats a lot of rice may need a larger device.

This is one reason that I’ve created a big list for you. Keep in mind your own needs and wants so that you will have a rice cooker that you will enjoy rather than wasting money on a unit that is too big, too expensive or no use to you at all!

Types of Rice Cookers1_2_L_Mini_Rice_Cooker_Electric_Lunch_Box_CMDREAM

The first step in choosing the right rice cooker for you is to consider the type of processor you want. When it comes to rice cookers, you have three options:

  • Conventional Rice Cooker
  • Smart Rice Cooker
  • Combination Rice Cooker

The two main types of rice cookers are conventional and smart which are the two I’ve tried, however, in recent years, combination units are making a Blockbuster entrance into the countertop appliance arena.

Conventional Rice Cooker

Conventional Rice Cookers are the most popular model of rice cooker. That’s because they’re super easy to use and very affordable.

Some cost as low as $10 and only use one button to cook your rice. Of course, if you want more options they are available too but at a higher, still affordable, price.

The one I used to use had many options like:

  • different types of rice, ex. brown, white, long-grain, etc.
  • steaming capabilities
  • keep warm function
  • and more!

For these units, you only have to consult the user guide for exact instructions on how much rice, liquid, and other add-ins you need to put in your cooker, press the button and it does the rest for you!

The best part is that you won’t have to worry about constantly checking your rice to make sure it doesn’t burn or that you’ve added too much water which makes it soggy.

The latter is my nemesis as I always add too much liquid into my rice somehow, even when I think I measure the water properly.

Pros:

  • affordable
  • extremely easy to use
  • a variety of cooking presets
  • cooks rice quickly

Cons:

  • rice and other options are limited
  • rice might be cooked to high standards of rice enthusiasts (I admit I’m not a big rice fanatic)

Smart Rice Cookerpanasonic_5_cup_japanese_rice_cooker_with_induction_heating_system_and_pre

Smart rice cookers use state of the art technology to sense what your rice needs to cook properly. Much like the inverter technology in countertop microwave ovens, smart rice cookers use what is called ‘fuzzy logic’ to cook your rice to fluffy (or fuzzy??) perfection.

If you eat a lot of rice or are picky about how it comes out, this type of rice cooker is for you!

For the most part, these units will run you over $100 BUT they are well worth the price. They are also a bit more challenging to learn how to use, however, like anything, once you learn to use it right your good as gold so don’t let it stop you.

Smart rice cookers take longer to cook your rice than a conventional unit will but you can easily get around this by putting on the rice ahead of time and letting it sit in your cooker on the ‘Keep Warm’ setting.

Pros:

  • consistently cooks rice to perfection
  • cooks a good variety of rices

Cons:

  • cook times are longer
  • more expensive
  • more complicated to use

Combo Rice Cookers

You might think that a combo rice cooker is a hybrid between the conventional and the smart rice cookers but they’re not.

They’re rice cookers that have other functions to cook different foods as well. A popular example that you might have heard about are InstaPots.

They can cook rice but also work as:

  • slow cookers
  • steamers
  • pressure cookers
  • etc.

These are a great option for you especially if your counter and cabinet/storage space is limited. So instead of having one unit for cooking rice, one unit for slow cooking, and so on, all of these cooking techniques can be accomplished with one cooker.

Having a combo rice cooker is also a good choice because you can cook a variety of foods like stews, roasts, curries, and even desserts instead of being confined to only rice and maybe a steamer like you would be with a conventional or smart rice cooker.

Pros:

  • multi-functional
  • can use a variety of cooking techniques
  • saves counter and storage space

Cons:

  • rice doesn’t cook as perfectly as a smart rice cooker
  • may be complicated to use

Features to Look For In The Best Rice CookerCuckoo_CR-0631F_6_cup_multifunctional_micom_rice_cooker_and_warmer_9_built-in_programs_white_gaba_mixed_brown_porridge_steam_slow_cooker

In addition to the type of rice cooker you prefer, there a couple of other factors you need to consider before making your final decision. I know this little mini-guide is a little long so far so I’ll make this discussion brief.

And don’t skip over this part because you need to know this before getting your rice cooker. The last thing that I want is for you to get a rice cooker that you hate or doesn’t suit your needs.

These things that you need to consider are:

  • size
  • cost
  • your desired usage

Size

The size of rice cookers are reported by how much UNCOOKED rice the unit can cook. This is because rice expands and it is hard to really measure cooked rice since the size of the grains can vary greatly.

Typically, rice cookers start at 3 cups/0.71 liters and go up to 20 cups/4.73 liters of uncooked rice.

If you don’t need to cook a lot of rice a small, 3 cup unit will work for you. But if you cook a lot of rice or prefer to cook in bulk then shoot for a 10-20 cup capacity.

For the purpose of this review, I will distinguish rice cookers by the sizes small, medium, large and extra large. Their capacties are as follows:

  • Small (Best for one person): Under 4 cups (Just under 1L)
  • Medium: 4 to 5.9 cups (1L – 1.4 L)
  • Large: 6 to 9.9 cups (1.4 L – 2.3 L)
  • Extra-Large: 10 cups and over (2.3 L +)

Typically, I use the largest size that I can find because I like to cook in bulk to meal prep. Meal prepping is awesome because you already have your separate containers that act just like ‘TV dinners’ but are a whole lot better for you.

All you have to do is pop them in the microwave or over a pot of hot water (double-boiler setup) and your food is ready for the entire week. It’s especially useful for those busy days when you don’t have the time to cook whole meals for your family.

If you don’t do this you’ve GOT TO try it 🙂

Cost

Of course, the bottom line often comes down to what you can afford. My first rice cooker was a conventional cooker and then I upgraded to a smart cooker but haven’t had the chance to try a combination rice cooker yet.

You should consider how much you can afford in comparison to the quality of rice cooker you want. Remember that even if you don’t have the money upfront, you can always save up if you want or need a more expensive unit.

The prices of rice cookers vary greatly. Of course, it depends on the quality and quantity.

A smaller rice cooker is going to cost less than a larger rice cooker and a lower quality rice cooker usually costs less than a higher quality rice cooker.

Prices can range from $10 upwards of $300. It all depends heavily on the particular unit you want to get.

If you don’t cook rice often, then you will want to consider investing in a less expensive unit whereas if you cook rice often you definitely want to make sure you purchase a unit fit for the constant use.

Your Desired Usage

As you found out in the ‘Types of Rice Cookers’ section, rice cookers can be very versatile. They can also take up a lot of space.

With these two things in mind, you will want to think about if you:

  • have space for a rice cooker in addition to other small appliances
  • want to cook other foods in your rice cooker
  • only want to use your rice cooker for cooking rice
  • want to cook a variety of rice grains

If you want to save on counter space and/or want to cook other foods in your rice cooker then a combination rice cooker is a good option.

But if you want your rice to come out perfectly or have a variety of kinds of rice you like to cook then you will want to invest in a smart rice cooker instead.

And if you want to stick with basic rice types like brown and white rice with basic steaming capabilities, a conventional rice cooker is a good one for you.

Now you can see how big of an impact your intended use for your rice cooker is. Be sure to really take time to think about this and the other features we’ve talked about before making a final decision.

  1. Hi! This is a very complete post and I am glad I landed here before I bought any rice cooker. I have been inclined to the idea of purchasing a combination rice cooker (one that is in between a conventional and a smart rice cooker).

And I think I found the one that suits me. I’ve made up my mind for Panasonic 5 cup rice cooker. Thanks!

    1. Hey Ann!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your thoughts with us. I’m so glad we could help you find the perfect rice cooker for your needs.

      Enjoy!

      Marlinda

  2. I’d definitely be willing to take the long view and go with the smart rice cooker. My reasoning here is simple: I tend to overcook, so going with the conventional would be out of the question.

That said, paying for better quality cooking is something I value with every cooking appliance that I’ve ever invested in and I’ll continue to take that route. It has yet to fail me and doing so has resulted in far more enjoyable meals.

I’d highly recommend the smart rice cooker to anyone whose cooking may not be their strong suit, as you won’t be disappointed in the results.

    1. Hey Todd!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience with us. I couldn’t agree more, paying the extra for GOOD quality appliances is never a bad thing.

And I hadn’t thought about it in this way but you’re right, having an appliance that can handle the cooking for you will allow even someone who isn’t strong at cooking to prepare delicious, perfectly cooked meals.

      Thanks for sharing,

      Marlinda

  3. Hi, thanks for sharing this article. I have heard of this but haven’t tried it out.

Reading your post has made me want to try it out. But please I have a question, which of this rice cooker is more suitable for a beginner like me because I will love to purchase it.

I am glad you shared it.

    1. Hey Sophia!

Thanks for your comment and question. I will discuss this in a further post but I think any of the smart rice cookers would be best for beginners.

They are set and forget and take care of everything for you. I’ll be honest with you and admit that rice cooking isn’t my strength either.

I LOVE that I can just toss in the ingredients and with the push of one button get perfectly cooked rice, oatmeal or whatever else I’m cooking.

I’ve had one similar to the Hamilton Beach Digital Programmable Rice Cooker & Food Steamer and currently use the COMFEE’ 20 cups Cooked (5.2Qt) Asian Style Programmable All-in-1 Multi-Cooker

Hope this helps and I’ll link the full article here when I do it.

  4. I’ve always been a tech freak and find the smart rice cooker really loveable. Too bad they are quite expensive compared with the other rice cookers and I have a budget I may want to stick to but will definitely get that someday.

For the moment the conventional rice cooker seems more appropriate as I wasn’t really expecting to find a rice cooker as cheap as 10 bucks, does this say something about the quality and durability of the cooker? I’m worried that if I get it, like most cheap stuff it may stop working before I even know it.

Thanks this is really eye-opening to all the rice cookers we never really know about.

    1. Hey Donny!

Thanks for your comment and great question! The price of the rice cooker is like everything else.

You can find decent units at low prices but you can also find garbage. I like to think of limits on prices that I won’t go below.

For instance, a rice cooker, I wouldn’t go below $50.

On the other hand, expensive doesn’t guarantee quality either. Sometimes you’re paying for a good name as well.

You just have to look at what you want to spend and make an educated decision. I also do not sacrifice for price.

I would rather save to get a good quality rice cooker than settle for a cheap piece of crap. Saving money is a sacrifice but totally overlooked and worth it.

I hope this helps and please let me know which you decide on if you get one. We would love to hear your experience as well.

      Take care and enjoy!

      Marlinda

  5. Hi There,

Now you’re talking, a rice cooker. I lived in Thailand for five years so I’ve had more than my share of rice then but damn I miss Thai food as it’s cooked over there.

I love your website and would definitely go for the conventional rice cooker my GF’s mom had a huge one of those.

    Great website.

    Steve

    1. Hey Jonah!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience with us! Wow, that must’ve been an awesome experience to have lived in Thailand for five years. I follow some people who also live in Thailand and it looks so beautiful and peaceful over there.

Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful weekend,

      Marlinda

  6. Getting a rice cooker is good as it helps a lot when you’re too hungry to cook anything. You can just cook rice while getting involved with other things knowing full well that your rice is totally safe from burning

Though all these seem quite interesting especially the prices, I like the Berryku YF223 1.2L De-Sugar Mini Rice Cooker the most here

    1. Hey Angela!

That’s so true. A rice cooker does everything for you so you can be sure that you’ll have a nice meal or soup knowing it won’t be burnt. You can even catch some downtime relaxing in the tub or something while it’s cooking!

I love that rice cooker too. Please share with us if you get it and try it. Would love to hear your thoughts and share some recipes 🙂

      Take care,

      Marlinda

  7. My mum is a big fan of rice cooking but I have never really thought of getting her a rice cooker because she is so used to cooking from the pot. I believe that this will make things even easier for her now.

I am very glad to see this post that you have written here. Thank you very much for the info. Cheers!

    1. Hey Riley!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing with us about your mum. She sounds awesome. I can’t cook rice to save my life! It always comes out mushy, lol.

I agree that a rice cooker will make things easier for her. Hope she enjoys it and come back and let us know which one you got her and how she’s enjoying it 🙂

      Take care,

      Marlinda

  8. We didn’t use to eat much rice but recently we have started to eat a lot more of it and I had heard of these kitchen appliances from a Chinese TV chef. It certainly sounds as if they could save me time and hassle so I had started to look into purchasing one.

This is exactly the kind of list I need to help me make a purchasing decision, so thank you very much for sharing.

    1. Hey there!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience with us. Yes, they certainly can save you a ton of hassle. If you decide to try one, please be sure you come back and let us know how you liked it 🙂

      Take care and enjoy!

  9. I’m looking for a rice cooker that’s ant-proof, meaning, even the smallest pesky ant can’t pass through the holes and pest on the rice. Usually, when I cook rice, it would be for two to three meals, morning, lunch, and then supper. But with these pesky ants here in my place, what is left for the lunch or supper is usually spoiled by these ants.

So, I’d like to know if these rice cookers that have been featured here especially the smart rice cooker like the Panasonic 5 Cup Japanese Rice Cooker have the feature of keeping away ants.

Do they have that feature? Are the holes tight enough that even the smallest ants can’t pass through?

    1. Hey Gomer

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your experience with us. Wow, do I ever know the struggle of fighting tiny ants. Summers in Bermuda seemed like a war with the ants!

While I don’t think that any of these rice cookers have a feature to specifically keep out ants, the smart cookers tend to be tighter sealed than the conventional ones. So although I’m not 100% sure, I can take an educated guess and say that ants probably won’t be able to get into the Panasonic 5 Cup Japanese Rice Cooker.

If that doesn’t work, I do have a solution that will. The cool thing about ants is that they communicate through scent and follow scent paths laid out by scout ants.

So if you disrupt the scent you will get rid of the ants. What I find really effective is to use something that leaves a scent. For instance, spray cologne, air freshener or something that smells and will stay on the counter. That way the ants won’t be able to come back again like if you simply wiped the surface.

The new scent serves as a deterrent thus protecting your rice. Just be sure your rice is covered up properly before you spray anything.

      Hope this helps 🙂

  10. Hi

To a lot of people cooking rice is such an art that it can be a difficult thing to get exactly right in the first place. I am really glad I came across your review on rice cookers, as it can be a difficult choice to make

I am glad you have gone into great detail on the different types and the pros and cons of each type. Your first thought is that why should I buy one when a saucepan will do fine.

The biggest problem is that rice cooks quickly and tends to stick at the bottom and you can cook it for far too long. Different rice also have different cooking times and it can be a nightmare.

I think you have given enough options. In the machines you have highlighted can any be used to make rice pudding?

    Thanks

    Antonio

    1. Hey Antonio!

Thanks for your comment and question. I would imagine that you could cook rice pudding in any of the units that you can cook oatmeal in since they are very similar. But don’t hold me to that because I’ve never tried it and I’m not really familiar with rice pudding either. This is my educated guess, lol.

      Take care,

      Marlinda

  11. Hi there,

Thank you for these thorough reviews on rice cookers. As an Asian who loves to eat rice, I really need one right now.

So far I have been cooking rice in a small saucepan only and it’s pretty painful if we can’t get it right (too much water or too dry) especially when it comes to cooking different types of rice or grains. I am always the one who will eat rice more than other family members.

I am keen on trying out the Panasonic 5 Cup (Uncooked) Rice Cooker with Fuzzy Logic and One-Touch Cooking because it will not eat up too much space on my kitchen counter, it has steamed basket so I can make steam buns. I can also make side dishes with it so it helps me to save my time cooking in the kitchen.

Thank you again for this post. It is very useful and informative. Now I know exactly what I’m looking for before I buy one.

    Cheers,

    Ferra

    1. Hey Ferra!

Thanks for your comment and for sharing your thoughts with us. I really like that one and am sure you’re going to enjoy it too.

I agree it does save time to be able to use one thing to cook multiple dishes at once. Very resourceful and saves on time, energy and other resources.

I hope you enjoy it and please feel free to come back with an update on how you are doing after you get it 🙂

      Happy cooking!

      Marlinda
